The Final Fantasy series has come a long way since the initial Nintendo role-playing game set the bar for all console RPGs to follow. The long road from these humble beginnings has built up a huge fan base over the last twenty years as the graphics, sound and game play have improved and redefined the genre. With the success of Final Fantasy XI, all eyes are turned to see what Square will do with Final Fantasy XIV – their second massively multiplayer role-playing game which is now in the closed alpha testing phase of development. But how will Final Fantasy XIV gameplay measure up to its predecessors?

Final Fantasy XIV gameplay details are slim at this point, but Square has revealed that it will be a departure from Final Fantasy XI which featured a much more level-based, traditional role-playing game experience building system. The new system is based around the use of weapons. Depending on the weapon you use, you will be developing different skills. The idea is not to pigeon-hole players into one type of gameplay by having them only use a sword while their magic ability is minimal. The early Final Fantasy games required hours of “leveling-up” – spending time battling monsters and healing to gain more power – in order to proceed in the game. This sometimes monotonous experience does not appeal to many online gamers. Final Fantasy XIV gameplay dynamics will shift the action away from this type of repetitive activity.

Additionally, Final Fantasy XIV is intended to be less dependent on team gameplay. There will be more emphasis on exploring the environment and a balanced dynamic for team battles. The overall focus is to allow players to play in different ways without negatively impacting their characters’ development. While this is a departure from previous Final Fantasy games, it seems like it will still appeal to long time fans of the series – who should be used to innovations and new approaches to familiar gaming concepts. Taking into account all these innovations plus the lush and detailed graphics seen in previews released thus far, Final Fantasy XIV is shaping up to be an excellent addition to the long running tradition of innovative games from Square. The most interesting aspect of all Square Enix role-playing games is the storyline. Rich character development, with intriguing story lines are the essential elements to a great RPG. Final Fantasy XIV is Square Enix next installment in the Final Fantasy series which will feature four disciplines that host a great number of FFXIV classes.

The story of Final Fantasy XIV takes place in the world of Eorzea. Eorzea is in the world of Hydaelyn. Many races inhabit the world of Eorzea. These races are the Miqo’te, Hyur, Elezen, Lalafell and Roegadyn. The history and Final Fantasy XIV Lore behind each character race is thought out with great detail.

The Hyur boast the largest population on Eorzea. The Hyur are characterized by their love of sophisticated technology. Their likeness is close to that of a human. In the Final Fantasy XI series, Hyurs are close in resemblance to Humes. The Hyur are divided into two clans: The Midland Hyur and the Highland Hyur. The Highland Hyur are a largely nomadic race and it is very rare to see a female Highland Hyur.

The Miqo’te migrated to the world of Eorzea during the Age of Endless Frost. The Miqo’te are a hunting tribe, and are divided into two clans: Seekers of the Sun and Keepers of the Moon. The most distinct difference between each clan is the skin tone and face paint.

The Lalafell are a group of agriculturalist that came to Eorzea with the introduction of transmarine commerce. The Lalafell are tiny in stature, but posses cunning intellect. The Plainsfolk Lalafell have a distinct hair coloration of earthy and grassy tones. The Dunesfolk Lalafell are beasts of burden and posses eyes of various coloring to protect from the hot dune sun.

The mighty Roegadyn are the maritime pirates of Eorzea. They posses a muscular build and are distinct for their large bodies. They possess infinite amounts of courage and are categorized by their clans. The Sea Wolves Roegadyn clan are the naval mercenaries of the Roegadyn family. The Hellsguard Roegadyn clan are characterized by their brightly toned skin.

Final Fantasy XIV Lore is rich with history. The storyline is epic in scale and players will be mesmerized by the Final Fantasy XIV Lore and will be enthralled with each new expansion.
